PROCMURA, Program for Interreligious Dialogue in Africa
PROCMURA was founded in 1959 and is the oldest organization in the field of interreligious dialogue in Africa. The background was the African independence movements, which wanted to overcome the inherited religious boundaries. PROCMURA is based in Nairobi, Kenya, from where it has an impact in many parts of Africa. From the beginning, it has seen itself as a decidedly Christian organization, which is evident in the first of its two guiding principles: "Credible witness to the Gospel in an interfaith environment of Christians and Muslims." The second guiding principle shows the specifically Christian-Muslim orientation: "Constructive cooperation with Muslims for peace and peaceful coexistence." Its work focuses on women's and youth work, in addition to conferences and consultations between leaders of Christian and Muslim communities. PROCMURA addressed the specific concerns of women earlier than other African organizations and has been pursuing a decided gender approach for several years.
