"More solidarity now" - with this slogan, development cooperation organizations are calling on the Federal Council not to make savings at the expense of the poorest countries. In particular, the important support for Ukraine should be financed from an additional fund - not at the expense of development cooperation. Mission 21 supports this campaign. The campaign to strengthen development cooperation is being launched by Alliance Sud, the "Swiss Competence Center for International Cooperation and Development Policy".
The aim of the campaign is to strengthen development cooperation, in particular to obtain financial resources to support disadvantaged and vulnerable people. The background to this request to the Federal Council being widely publicized is the state government's strategy for development cooperation in the 2025-28 phase.
Controversial strategy of the Federal Council
The Federal Council is planning to finance support for the reconstruction of Ukraine from the international cooperation budget. However, development cooperation organizations are of the opinion that this important contribution of CHF 1.5 billion for Ukraine should not be at the expense of the poorest countries. The Federal Council's strategy was also rejected by the majority in the political consultation process. With the broad support of many development cooperation organizations and numerous personal statements, the campaign aims to persuade the Federal Council to finance the fund for Ukraine outside of the international cooperation budget.
Mission 21 also supports the campaign's appeal. The increasing crises worldwide make it all the more necessary to strengthen solidarity with people in the Global South. The consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, wars and the climate crisis are having a particularly negative impact on those people who are already disadvantaged. They should also be increasingly strengthened through solidarity and support from Switzerland.
