Selina is the owner of a palm oil plantation for two hours. In normal life, the 15-year-old is a schoolgirl, she attends confirmation classes in Unterseen in the canton of Bern and has traveled with pastor Christine Sieber.
But on North-South Day, Selina and her classmates change roles. For example, they become truck landlords or owners of a plantation or a mill. In the "Palm Oil Business Game", they deal with the raw material palm oil. The game was developed at ETH Zurich for research into palm oil production and later adapted for use at secondary school level.
In their role, the students experience which methods bring advantages on the market and how money can be earned most quickly. They also reflect on what it means for those involved when palm oil is produced sustainably.
Professional input and fine lunch
The young people participate enthusiastically and also ask questions about their own consumption behavior and their contribution to climate protection. "The palm oil game was rated very highly by almost everyone," says Pastor Sieber during the evaluation of the North-South Day of the Reformed Churches of Bern-Jura-Solothurn, where the game was used. Pastor Ueli Fuchs from Burgdorf also draws a positive balance: "The day was a well-rounded experience.
thing and I am glad that I was able to participate with my confirmands*. It was a good addition to the topics I take up in class."
On conf days like the North-South Day, conf groups join together to delve into a topic for which there is not enough space in regular classes. The day also serves as a networking opportunity and a chance to get to know each other.
of the young people among themselves. Mission 21 takes over the organization of the day on behalf of cantonal churches or parishes. We offer the professional preparation of contents as well as the framework from the welcome to the evaluation.

Our course offering on the topic of climate justice
Mission 21 has a wide range of courses for young people and adults. We take up the topic of climate justice in the course "Does climate change lead to a new lifestyle?" and on conference days.
Participants learn new things about the effects of climate change and discuss ways to make their own lives more sustainable. It is also about how people understand their Christian faith as a motivation to get involved in protecting the planet.
We conduct the courses at your site, at our site or online.
Dates by arrangement.
