Nora Zangabeyo's mission in South Sudan
South Sudan is one of the poorest and most unstable countries in the world. Women and children in particular suffer from violence, poverty and political conflict. Nora Zangabeyoa dedicated social worker, is committed to peace and women's rights.
In Juba she runs workshops on conflict prevention, peacebuilding and support in cases of gender-based violence. These training courses empower women so that they can actively participate in conflict resolution.
Despite the peace treaty signed in 2018, the already tense situation is currently escalating dramatically, to the point of threatening civil war. Ethnic conflicts, political uncertainty and humanitarian crises are exacerbating the situation. The risk of sexualized violence increases, especially in times of unrest.
The church plays a central role in peace work. The church supported by Mission 21 Presbyterian Church (PCOSS) offers women a safe space for exchange and healing.
In the workshops, the South Sudanese women learn about their rights and can then actively participate in conflict resolution.
Nora Zangabeyo's work is helping to promote reconciliation and peace in South Sudan - for a better future for her country.
Nigeria
Persistent peacebuilding in an interreligious environment
Nigeria is suffering from economic crises, ethnic tensions and increasing violence. Our partner organization Lifeline Compassionate Global Initiative (LCGI) is actively committed to peace.
Alhaji Idris Abubakara petrol seller from Maingo, lost his store due to ethnic conflict. Before the crisis, Christian Irigwe and Muslim Hausa and Fulani lived together peacefully, but droughts and economic hardship led to violence. Thanks to LCGI training in "Restorative justice", Abubakar was able to change his perspective and now regards the Irregwe as brothers and sisters. He runs his business again without fear and passes on his knowledge.
Left: Alhaji Idris Abubakar; right: Muslim and Christian women at an LCGI training course on interfaith dialog.
The LCGI promotes social cohesion through interfaith community groups, peace training and vocational training programs. Young people and widows receive training and start-up capital to become economically independent. Change takes time, but with targeted support, Mission 21 continues to promote the LCGI's sustainable peace work in Nigeria.
Indonesia
With peace villages against resentment and hatred
Yenni Wahid, Director of the Wahid Foundation, plants a tree in the village of Bangsprin to mark it as a new peace village.
Indonesia is a country of great diversity, but radicalism and intolerance are on the rise. Mission 21, together with the Wahid Foundation and the Protestant Reformed Sunda Church (GKP) the concept of Peace villagesto promote tolerance and interreligious exchange.
Since 2017, 22 "Peace Villages" was founded. Selected villagers are trained to pass on knowledge about peace and tolerance. There are also deliberate interfaith activities to strengthen understanding between the groups.
GKP has developed this idea for three "Diversity villages" in West Java. In Tamiyang the traditional peaceful coexistence of Christian and Muslim women is being consolidated. In Gunung Putri the project promotes the acceptance of marginalized groups, especially LGBTQIA+ people, who are legally and socially disadvantaged there. In Genteng the focus is on peace-building measures to defuse social tensions.
The GKP and the Tamiyang Diversity Village make a (still) rare sight in Indonesia possible: women playing football - even in an interfaith team.
These local initiatives show how education and interfaith cooperation can counteract radicalism and promote sustainable coexistence. Mission 21 remains committed to peace in Indonesia.

Standing up for peace. On the road to peace.
Peace is not a state, but a process - it requires courage, clarity and change. Whether in our personal environment, in society or between states: Decisive steps are needed on the path to peace:
- Understand the causes of conflicts
- Process from experience
- Forgiven and Reconcile
Only in this way can sustainable peace grow.

Book our workshops on the topic of peacebuilding
Religions can exacerbate conflicts, but they can also create peace. Mission 21 promotes transcultural and interreligious dialog - worldwide and in its educational work. Through encounters and mutual learning, we create the basis for peaceful coexistence.
We would be happy to come to your parish and run a workshop to match the campaign theme. For adults or young people.
Can religions bring peace?
What role do religions play in conflicts - as drivers of violence or as pioneers of peace? Using examples from Indonesia, Nigeria, Cameroon and South Sudan, we shed light on their significance for peacebuilding and trauma management.
With courage against hate speech
An interactive simulation shows what cyberbullying feels like - whether as a perpetrator or a resister. Participants discover ways to actively campaign for respectful interaction online and against discrimination.
The ABCs of transcultural communication
We use practical exercises to test how communication barriers can be overcome in multicultural contexts and how intercultural skills can be strengthened.
